Wood signs have become one of the most popular wedding décor elements in the past few years, and for good reason. They're beautiful, they feel personal, and unlike most wedding decorations, they're something you actually want to keep afterward. A well-made wood sign goes from wedding backdrop to living room décor without missing a beat.
But ordering custom signs for a wedding has some specific considerations that everyday sign orders don't. Timelines are tighter, the stakes are higher, and there are more details to coordinate. Here's everything you need to know.
Types of Wedding Wood Signs
Welcome Sign
The most popular wedding sign by far. Typically large (18"–24" wide), it stands at the ceremony or reception entrance and greets guests. It usually includes the couple's names and wedding date, and sometimes a short phrase like "Together is our favorite place to be." Because it's one of the first things guests see, it sets the visual tone for the whole event.
Seating Chart
A wood seating chart — either a single large board or a series of smaller panels — replaces the traditional printed card stock display. It's elegant, easy to read from a distance, and doubles as a keepsake. Seating charts require the most lead time because the guest list and table assignments need to be finalized before we can make them. Plan accordingly.
Directional Signs
Signs pointing guests to the ceremony, cocktail hour, reception, parking, or restrooms. These are usually simpler in design but need to be large enough to read at a distance. A set of four or five directional signs is a small investment that makes a big difference in guest experience — especially at venues where the layout isn't obvious.
Table Numbers
Individual wood table number signs, typically 5"–8" tall, standing upright or leaning on the table. These look cohesive with wood centerpieces and add warmth that printed cardstock can't match. We can make these as a matched set in any quantity you need.
Bar Sign
A fun addition to the reception: a wood sign listing the signature cocktails, the bar menu, or a phrase like "The bar is always open." These are usually rectangular, 12"–18" wide, and are often one of the most photographed signs at the wedding.
Mr. & Mrs. Signs
Classic wood signs for the sweetheart table or the getaway car. Often done in the couple's last name or initials. Simple, timeless, and one of the signs couples most often want to keep after the wedding.
Guest Book Alternative
A wood board or panel where guests sign their names and leave messages directly on the wood — with paint pens, Sharpies, or markers provided at the table. This has become increasingly popular as an alternative to the traditional guest book, since it becomes a piece of art you actually display rather than a book that lives in a drawer.
What Information You'll Need to Provide
The more specific you can be when you order, the better your signs will turn out. Here's what to have ready:
- Names — exactly as they should appear (first names only, full names, married name, hyphenated, etc.)
- Wedding date — the way you want it formatted (October 11, 2026 vs. 10.11.26, etc.)
- Venue name — if it's going on the sign
- Phrases or quotes — exact wording and punctuation matter
- Color preferences — stain color for the wood, paint color for the letters
- Size — know where the sign will be placed and how much space it has
- Wedding colors — we can work within your color palette
- Font preference — script/cursive, block letters, mixed, etc. (we'll send you options)
Timeline: When to Order
Our standard production time is 5–7 business days, plus shipping time. But for weddings, we strongly recommend building in more buffer than that. Here's a practical wedding sign timeline:
| Weeks Before Wedding | What to Do |
|---|---|
| 8+ weeks out | Contact us for a custom quote. Design consultation for large or complex pieces (seating charts, multi-panel sets). |
| 6 weeks out | Finalize and place your order. This is the ideal window for most wedding sign sets. |
| 4 weeks out | Last comfortable date to order most items. Signs will be made and shipped with a week of buffer before the wedding. |
| 2–3 weeks out | Rush territory. Contact us before ordering to confirm we can accommodate your timeline. |
| 1 week out | We cannot guarantee delivery in time. Please reach out — in some cases we can arrange local pickup if you're in East Texas. |
Seating charts need extra lead time because your guest list and table assignments need to be completely finalized before we start. Don't order a seating chart until you have a final, approved guest list and table plan in hand — last-minute changes are extremely difficult to make once the sign is in production.
What Happens After the Wedding
One thing we hear all the time from couples who ordered wedding signs: they're the pieces that end up staying on the wall long after everything else from the wedding is stored or thrown away. A welcome sign becomes living room décor. Mr. & Mrs. signs go above the bed or in the entry hall. The guest book panel hangs in the hallway.
We make our wedding signs with the same care and materials as everything else — real wood, proper sealing — specifically so they can live as permanent pieces in your home. That's why we build them to last, not just to look good on a single day.
